Correlation between infection rate of triatominies and Chagas Disease in Southwest of Bahia, Brazil: a warning sign? Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVEIRA,ELIEZER A. DA; RIBEIRO,ISRAEL S.; AMORIM,MIGUEL S.; ROCHA,DALVA V.; COUTINHO,HELDER S.; FREITAS,LEANDRO M. DE; TOMAZI,LAIZE; SILVA,ROBSON A.A. DA.
ABSTRACT Chagas disease, caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi, has a wide distribution in South America, and its main method of control is the elimination of triatomines. It is presented here the geographic distribution and the rate of natural infection by T. cruzi of triatomines collected and evaluated from 2008 to 2013 in southwest of Bahia. Triatomines were captured in the intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary areas of five cities located in the southwest of Bahia state, identified, and analyzed for the presence of trypanosomatids in their feces. During the study period the number of patients suspected for acute Chagas disease was recovered from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). 8966 triatomines were captured and identified as belonging to...

Detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in a cattle/pudu interface Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Salgado,M.; Aleuy,O. A.; Sevilla,I. A.; Troncoso,E..
ABSTRACTMycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) is the etiological agent of paratuberculosis. In Chile, information about Map isolation from both domestic ruminant and wildlife species has been accumulating, but it has to be extended to other species. The present study focuses specifically on one wild grazing species, the pudu (Pudu puda), one of the less known South American deer considered an endangered species that shares pastures with cattle in southern Chile, where the greatest part of the country's dairy cattle population is located. Convenient samples from 3 pudus were collected from one dairy farm where Map infection had previously been confirmed in cattle. All three pudus shed the bacterium in feces and the isolates are the same type of...

Effectiveness of both synthetic compounds and biological extracts against powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) on winter wheat Agrociencia
Věchet,Lubomír; Šerá,Božena.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of foliar application of various synthetic compounds and biological extracts against powdery mildew on wheat. Seed coats of winter wheat were treated by synthetical compounds (benzothiadiazole, salicylic acid, and glycine betaine) or by the extracts from plants (oak, giant knotweed, curcuma, and ginger). Then the seeds were planted using small-field experiments with powdery mildew infection (repetitions over a two-year period; experimental field in Ruzyne, Prague). Leaf area infection was measured and the Cumulative Proportion of Leaf Area Diseased (CPLAD) was calculated. Data were analysed using ANOVA (Tukey test, p≤0.05). Effectiveness of preparations varied 30 % to 72 % in 2008, and 25 % to...

Effects of Haemonchus contortus infection on sodium status of sheep Ciência Rural
Ortolani,Enrico Lippi.
Eight five-month-old male lambs received a diet with marginal levels of sodium (0.5 g Na/kg DM); four lambs were given a single dose of infective Haemonchus contortus larvae (4,600 L3/ head) and four were kept uninfected. The lambs were slaughtered 30 days after the infection. Sodium concentration was determined in the abomasal fluid at the slaughter. The balance between intake and faecal excretion of sodium was evaluated. Saliva was collected at days zero, 20 and 30 to determine the Na:K ratio. The mean total worm burden retrieved was 1390. The infection increased abomasal sodium concentration (p< 0.001) and reduced faecal sodium excretion (p<0.02), but there was not a significant relationship between worm burden and abomasal (p >0.082) or faecal...

Cornetta,Maria da Conceição de Mesquita; Gonçalves,Ana Katherine da Silveira; Bertini,Anna Maria.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of Papanicolaou staining for the initial diagnosis of Chlamydial infection in pregnant women. A hundred thirteen patients were examined with a Papanicolaou test, independent of gestational age, parity or maternal age. Three endocervical samples were collected; the first two were collected with a brush (Cytobrush plus, Mediscand, Sweden) and the third with Ayre's spatula. The first specimen was used for McCoy cell culture and the other two were examined cytologically. Chlamydial infection was detected in 9 (7.9%) patients. Only one (0.8%) was diagnosed by cytological exam. The sensitivity and specificity of the cytological examination were 10 and 98%, respectively. The estimated positive predictive value was 33.3% and...

Experimental infections with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis obtained from armadillos: comparison to clinical isolates BJID
Nishikaku,Angela Satie; Peraçoli,Maria Terezinha S.; Bagagli,Eduardo; Sugizaki,Maria Fátima; Sartori,Alexandrina.
Paracoccidioides brasiliensis causes paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) that is one of the most prevalent systemic human mycoses in Latin America. Armadillos show a high incidence of PCM infection and could, therefore, be a natural reservoir for this fungus. In this study were compared the virulence profiles of isolates obtained from nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) (PbT1 and PbT4) and isolates from PCM patients (Pb265 and Bt83). Pathogenicity was evaluated by fungal load and analysis of colony morphology. Immunity against the fungus was tested by delayed type hypersensitivity test (DTH) and antibody quantification by ELISA. The higher virulence of PbT1 and PbT4 was suggested by higher fungal load in spleen and lungs. Armadillo isolates and Bt83...

Experimental Salmonella Gallinarum infection in light laying hen lines BJM
Berchieri Júnior,Angelo; Oliveira,Gláucia Helaine de; Pinheiro,Lucas Augusto Soeiro; Barrow,Paul A..
Although the epidemiology of fowl typhoid in chickens supposedly involves a vertical transmission stage, a previous work run by the authors has suggested that this did not happen in a commercial line of laying hens highly susceptible to systemic disease with Salmonella Gallinarum. A new experiment was carried out in two other lines of commercial layers, considerably more resistant than those used in the previous study. Clinical fowl typhoid was not observed, but Salmonella Gallinarum was isolated from the spleen and liver four weeks after infection and, sporadically, from the ovary.

Exploring First Interactions Between Ostreid Herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) and Its Host, Crassostrea gigas: Effects of Specific Antiviral Antibodies and Dextran Sulfate ArchiMer
Martenot, Claire; Faury, Nicole; Morga, Benjamin; Degremont, Lionel; Lamy, Jean-baptiste; Houssin, Maryline; Renault, Tristan.
Viral entry mechanisms of herpesviruses constitute a highly complex process which implicates several viral glycoproteins and different receptors on the host cell surfaces. This initial infection stage was currently undescribed for Ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1), a herpesvirus infecting bivalves including the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. To identify OsHV-1 glyproteins implicated in the attachment of the virus to oyster cells, three viral putative membrane proteins, encoded by ORF 25, 41, and 72, were selected and polyclonal antibodies against these targets were used to explore first interactions between the virus and host cells. In addition, effects of dextran sulfate, a negative charged sulfated polysaccharide, were investigated on OsHV-1 infection....
